ইতিহাস
National Maritime Institute, Chittagong (Former STC) was initially established in 1952 in a rented house.
Training started in 1959 at Hazi Camp Premises, Pahartali, Chittagong.
The Institute was relocated in Seamen’s Hostel Premises after Independence in 1971.
The Institute is relocated at Hazi Camp, Pahartali in 1973.
9476 trainees given pre-sea training from 1959 to December 1993.
Seamen and emigration welfare directorate was absorbed from Labour & Man power Ministry to Ministry of Shipping in 1989 to make the administration more efficient and workable.
NMI again & finally relocated at Seamen’s Hostel in 1989 to meet the international Standard in accordance with STCW-78/95/2010 Convention of IMO.
The permanent Training Building of the NMI with new infrastructure was built including modern training facilities during 1993-94 with the financial and technical assistance from the Govt. of Bangladesh and Japan.
The name of NMI has been white listed in the IMO compendium in 2000.
The Seamen’s Training Centre was renamed as “National Maritime Institute” with effect from July 07, 2004.
The Institute has completed a project namely “Development of Seamen’s Training Centre” and renovation of Seamen’s Hostel at a cost of about Tk. 5.00 Crores in 2003-06.
The NMI has so far trained 1862 Pre-Sea-Ratings and 8379 Post-Sea-Ratings/Officer since 1994 to June 2012.
The Administration of NMI is under directly Ministry of Shipping w.e.f. 29-08-2010.

ক্যাপ্টেন আতাউর রহমান ৮ সেপ্টেম্বর’ ২০২১ তারিখে ভারপ্রাপ্ত অধ্যক্ষ এবং ১৬ই ফেব্রুয়ারী’ ২০২২ তারিখে অধ্যক্ষ হিসাবে ন্যাশনাল মেরিটাইম ইন্সটিটিউটে অধ্যক্ষের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করেন। এর পূর্বে তিনি ১২ মার্চ’২০১৩ তারিখ হতে এ ইন্সটিটিউটে চীফ নটিক্যাল ইন্সট্রাক্টর হিসাবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। এ পদে কাজ করে তিনি ন্যাশনাল মেরিটাইম ইন্সটিটিউটের উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখেন।
ক্যাপ্টেন আতাউর রহমান ৪ জানুয়ারী’১৯৭৫ তারিখে নোয়াখালী জেলায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তাঁর পিতা জনাব হাফিজুর রহমান এবং মাতা মরহুমা পেয়ারা বেগম। তিনি ১৯৯০ সালে আগ্রাবাদ সরকারি কলোনী উচ্চবিদ্যালয় হতে ১ম বিভাগে এস.এস.সি, ১৯৯২ সালে চট্টগ্রাম সরকরি কলেজ হতে ১ম বিভাগে এইচ.এস.সি এবং ১৯৯৪ সালে জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীন বাংলাদেশ মেরিন একাডেমী হতে ১ম বিভাগে বি.এস.সি (নটিক্যাল সাইন্স) ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। তাছাড়া তিনি ২০১৭ সালে নৌপরিবহন অধিদপ্তরের অধীনে ডেক অফিসার ক্লাস-১ (মাষ্টার মেরিনার) সার্টিফিকেট অর্জন করেন।
ক্যাপ্টেন আতাউর রহমান বাংলাদেশ মেরিন একাডেমীর ২৯তম ব্যাচের একজন ক্যাডেট অফিসার। তিনি ১৯৯৫ সালে কন্টিনেন্টাল লাইনার এজেন্সী বাংলাদেশের এম.ভি কন্টিনেন্ট-১ নামক সমুদ্রগামী জাহাজে ক্যাডেট অফিসার হিসাবে চাকুরি জীবন শুরু করেন। অতঃপর তিনি সার্টিফিকেট অব কম্পিটেন্সী পরীক্ষার মাধ্যমে থার্ড অফিসার, সেকেন্ড অফিসার এবং চীফ অফিসার হিসাবে বিভিন্ন কোম্পানীর ১৩টি সমুদ্রগামী জাহাজে চাকুরি করেছেন। তাছাড়া তিনি সরকারি চাকুরিতে যোগদান করার পর সরকারি বিভিন্ন ইন্সটিটিউট/প্রতিষ্ঠান হতে বিভিন্ন শর্ট কোর্সে অংশগ্রহণ করে সার্টিফিকেট অর্জন করেন। তিনি সরকারি চাকুরিতে যোগদান করে চীন ও যুক্তরাজ্য ভ্রমণ করেন। তিনি ন্যাশনাল মেরিটাইম ইন্সটিটিউট, চট্টগ্রামের জন্য সিমুলেটর সংগ্রহ শীর্ষক প্রকল্পের প্রকল্প পরিচালকের দায়িত্ব নিষ্ঠার সাথে পালন করেন এবং প্রকল্পটি সফলভাবে সম্পন্ন করেছেন। এছাড়া তিনি আন্তর্জাতিক রেটিংধারী একজন দাবাড়ু এবং সাবেক জাতীয় দাবা খোলোয়াড়।
ক্যাপ্টেন আতাউর রহমান ও মিসেস নুসরাত জাহান দম্পতির ২জন কন্যা সন্তান রয়েছে।

Capt. Ataur Rahman has taken over the charge of National Maritime Institute as Principal (In-Charge) since 8th September 2021 and 16th February 2022 has taken over the charge of National Maritime Institute as Principal. Before that he had been working as the Chief Nautical Instructor since 12th March’2013. Serving at that post he had rendered tremderous Contribution for the development of the Institute.
Capt. Ataur Rahman was born on 4th January’1975 at Noakhali district. His father is Mr. Hafizur Rahman and mother Late Mrs. Peara Begum. He passed his SSC exam from Agrabad Govt. Colony High School in First Division in the year 1990, HSC exam from Chittagong College in First Division in the year 1992 & BSc (Nautical Science) from Bangladesh Marine Academy under National University in 1st Class in the year 1994. Besides, he has obtained his CoC Class-1 Certificate (Master Mariner) under Department of Shipping in the year 2017.
Capt. Ataur Rahman is an ex-cadet of 29th Batch of Bangladesh Marine Academy. He started his sea carrier as a deck Cadet on board Continent-1 of Continantal Liner Agencies Ltd., Bangladesh in the year 1995. Later he gradually became 3rd Officer, 2nd Officer & Chief Officer after passing diffrent certificate of competency exam and served on board 13 different Ocean Going Vessels. After joinging Govt. service he has under gone many professional courses and obtained certificates from various Govt. & foreign Institute and organizations. After joining Govt. service he made official tour to China & UK. He was the Project Director of the Project “Procurement of Simulator for National Maritime Institute, Chattogram” & successfully completed the project. Moreover he is an International Rated Chess Player & is also an Ex-National Chess player of Bangladesh.
Capt. Ataur Rahman & Mrs. Nasrat Jahan couple has two daughters.
